According to the latest researches by Professor Carlos Cebola on the foundation and early days of Nisa village new facts have come up which have greatly enhanced the understanding and knowledge on Nisa’s history. The facts we now present hereunder are the results of those researches.
In the year 1199 King D.Sancho I donates the «Land of Açafa» to the Order of the Temple. This property was borded on the North side by the Tejo River and to the South included parts of today’s county areas of Nisa and Castelo de Vide and a part of Spanish land near today’s borderline. These donations had as main purpose to settle people in remote and unpopulated areas, and ultimately, to defend the kingdom.
In those lands Templars built fortresses to defend themselves from infidel invaders and as a sign of possession. Simultaneously the monarch announces the arrival of French settlers, which arrived in several stages, being the last group to arrive destined to settle within the «Land of Açafa».
They settled near the fortress built by the warrior monks and there they built their homes and founded villages which they named after their home lands. Thus the name of Nisa came to be. Being the first inhabitants originally from the city of Nice they erected in this new land the “Nova Nice” (New Nice) which appears in documents as “Nisa a Nova” (The New Nisa), while the name of “Nisa a Velha” (The Old Nisa) appears as referring to their ancient land of origin, the French city of Nice.
Thus the names of the villages like Arêz (from the French city of Arles), Montalvão (from the French city of Montauban) and Tolosa (from the French city of Tolouse). All these names came from the names of villages from the South of France. The first Privilege Law the village of Nisa was conceded somewhere between the years of 1229 and 1232 by the Master D.Fr.Estevão de Belmonte.
In the year 1512 King Don Manuel I awards the village a new Privilege Law where the name «Nisa» appears written with two “ss” as «Nissa» probably due to the influence of the word «Nice».
In the year 1343, King D.Afonso IV was at war with his son in law King Afonso XI of Castilla. This situation placed in great risk the lands near the borderline. Because of the situation the Master of the Temple requests and is granted by the King the construction of a strong wall around the village of Nisa for protection.
King D.João I awards the title of “Notável” (Remarkable) to the village of Nisa, after which King D.João IV by “Carta Régia” (Royal Decree) dated 13th October awards Nisa the category of Marquisate. The title of Marquis was then awarded to D.Vasco Luís de Gama 5th Count of Vidigueira.
Later on and by decree dated 6th November 1836 the county of Nisa was joined by the villages of Arêz and Montalvão. The villages of Alpalhão and Tolosa were joined by decree dated 3rd August 1853 being however released in 1895 and again joined in 1898.
The village of Amieira do Tejo was joined to the County of Gavião in 1836 but later on was joined to the county of Nisa through decree dated 26th of September 1895.
