Alter do Chão's Castle reopened on July, 4th

The castle of Alter do Chao, closed for 14 years, reopened on July 4th, with a ceremony presided by the President, after almost 844 thousand euros invested in restoration works and adaptation to museum unit, as part of a city's application to the Operational Program for Culture (POC), CasteloAlter
CasteloAlter The monument, which was totally degraded and is now converted into museum space, was built by D. Pedro I in 1359.
"This area is one of the town's pearls and could be an important vehicle to attract more tourists to our region and promote the culture of the county."
Located in the center of this Alentejo's town, the castle is different from the other strongholds of military character because he is a flat local.
Property of the House of Braganza, the castle was used by kings of that dynasty (the last) during their trips to the region, as residential space.
With an investment of nearly 844 thousand euros, the city of Alter do Chão had invested more than half of the total value of the work and equipment (over 476 thousand euros).
The castle was the target of cleaning out its fortifications and consolidation, restoration and recovery from inside and outside, as well as floors and staircases.

CasteloAlter During the interventions in place, those responsible for the work carried out also works in the scenic area of the framework of the central courtyard.
The castle is now endowed with "two interpretation rooms, two rooms for temporary exhibitions and a interpretation room of the Casa de Braganza Foundation."
After this investment, the Casa de Braganza Foundation, the owner of space, lent the castle free of charge for a period of 30 years, to the local municipality.
